Showtime released the trailer of its upcoming provocative docuseries Supervillain: The Making of Tekashi 6ix9ine Wednesday (Jan. 27).

Better Call Saul star Giancarlo Esposito narrates the three-part series about how New York City deli clerk Daniel Hernandez molded himself to become the viral face-tattooed, rainbow-haired hip-hop star Tekashi 6ix9ine. Based on Rolling Stone journalist Stephen Witt’s January 2019 feature “Tekashi 6ix9ine: The Rise and Fall of a Hip-Hop Supervillain,” the Showtime series will also chronicle his high-profile criminal past and feature an exclusive post-prison interview following his release last year.

In the teaser, scenes from 6ix9ine’s interviews, video shoots, concerts, court appearances and more are cut together as several of his notable quotes about becoming a “legend” and “infamous” play.

In February 2019, 6ix9ine pleaded guilty to firearms and racketeering charges. He agreed with prosecutors to speak out against his former associates, the Brooklyn gang Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods, who helped cultivate his initial gangsta persona. He reduced his sentence to two years by providing a tell-all testimony, with 13 months time served. In April 2020, he was released as COVID-19 ravaged the prison system.

Karam Gill directed Supervillain, which was produced by Imagine Documentaries, Rolling Stone and Lightbox. Executive producers include Brian Grazer with Justin Wilkes and Sara Bernstein of Imagine Documentaries, Gus Wenner of Rolling Stone, Jonathan Chinn and Simon Chinn of Lightbox, Peter J. Scalettar and Witt.

Supervillain will premiere on Showtime on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 10 p.m. ET. Episodes will air every Sunday through March 7, and the entire three-part docuseries will be available to download and watch on demand on Showtime and its various partner platforms on Feb. 21.
