Multiple songs by late rapper MF Doom reach Billboard’s LyricFind U.S. and Global charts dated Jan. 9 following the announcement of his death on Dec. 31.
The LyricFind Global and LyricFind U.S. charts rank the fastest momentum-gaining tracks in lyric-search queries and usages globally and in the U.S., respectively, provided by LyricFind. The Global chart includes queries from all countries, including the U.S. The company is the world’s leader in licensed lyrics, with data provided by more than 5,000 publishers and utilized by more than 100 services, including Amazon, Pandora, Deezer, Microsoft, SoundHound and iHeartRadio. The latest tracking week ended Jan. 3.
On LyricFind Global, MF Doom’s “Doomsday,” featuring Pebbles the Invisible Girl, debuts at No. 14. According to LyricFind, views of the song’s lyrics spiked 3,590% globally following the Dec. 31 news of his death.
Additionally, MF Doom’s “Rapp Snitch Knishes,” featuring Mr. Fantastik, reaches LyricFind Global at No. 17, with its lyric view jump at 1,725% on Dec. 31.
“Doomsday” was released on MF Doom’s 1999 debut solo album Operation: Doomsday, while “Rapp Snitch Knishes” appeared on his 2004 LP MM… Food.
The LyricFind U.S. list also sees a “Doomsday” appearance, with the song bowing at No. 19.
Despite the news of MF Doom’s passing coming in the waning hours of the U.S. streaming and sales tracking week of Dec. 25-31, streams and sales of the rapper’s solo catalog as MF Doom nonetheless saw a pronounced boost in the tracking period, with on-demand U.S. streams up 90% to 3.5 million, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data, as well as 1,000 sales of albums, up 29%. He also released two albums as Viktor Vaughn (185,000 streams, up 79%) and one each as Doom (415,000 streams, up 100%) and King Geedorah (203,000 streams, up 48%).
Other groups/projects in which MF Doom was involved also see late-tracking-week gains in streams, including Madvillain (2.7 million on-demand U.S. streams, up 144%), Danger Doom (244,000 streams, up 78%), JJ Doom (83,000 streams, up 95%) KMD (35,000 streams, up 56%) and NehruvianDoom (25,000 streams, up 30%).
Further gains and chart activity are expected on the charts dated Jan. 16, representing the first full tracking week (Jan. 1-6) after the announcement of MF Doom’s death.
Born Daniel Dumile in London, MF Doom died Oct. 31 at 49 years old, but his death was not revealed until two months later via an Instagram post from his wife. A cause of death has not been announced.
