Megan Thee Stallion is friends with Beyoncé now. And Jay-Z. Yeah, even she can’t believe it. On Wednesday night (Dec. 9) the Good News rapper sat down with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show to run down her hot girl year and describe what it feels like to have two of your heroes on speed dial, as well as how she embraced her early COVID-19 weight gain and turned it into a superpower on the single “Body.”
“I don’t think it really still has even hit me yet,” Meg said about all the accolades she’s received this year, including four Grammy nominations and being named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and GQ’s rapper of the year. “But, like, when I talk to my grandma she makes me feel like, ‘Wow, Megan, you’re really doing a good job!’ and I be like, ‘You know what? My grandma says I’m doing good, so I must be doing something right!'”
She also explained that remixing “Savage” in April with fellow Houstonian Beyoncé made her remember the first time she saw Destiny’e Child in concert at the Houston Rodeo. “I remember being a little kid and being like, ‘Wow, I want to do this one day,” she said. “Being from Houston you have to know what Beyoncé just means to us. She’s like the standard. So being able to just speak to Beyoncé now, I’m like… ‘pat on the back, this is great!'”
Because she’s become friendly with Bey’s other half, Jay-Z, Colbert asked who gives better advice. “I would say Jay-Z gives the fun advice,” she revealed. “Like, say if I’m having a bad day, he’ll be like, ‘Megan, girl, you need to be somewhere driving a boat… Turn up, have a good time… he give me more, like, the hot girl advice.” Queen Bey, on the other hand, is more of a “rise above” advice giver.
After such a difficult year, Meg explained that she decided to call her album Good News because she wanted to wake up and see headlines that read “Good News is Trending” and “Good News is Everywhere… and It’s Coming From Megan Thee Stallion.” She also had a simple response to all the aggrieved Republicans and right-wing pundits who gave her grief over the explicit nature of her Cardi B hit “WAP.”
“Them people crazy,” she said with a smile.
Meg dipped into the joy she’s getting from watching the current TikTok #BodyOdyChallenge and what originally inspired the song. “At the beginning of quarantine I felt like I definitely gained the quarantine fifteen and I was literally in the living room looking at myself saying, ‘wow girl, you have really done it,'” she said. “You look good, though. We should dance about it.” She then wrote all the verses of the song in which she’s admiring her “fluff” and encouraging others to do the same.
