Lil Wayne helped take fans out to the ball game on Thursday (April 1) when he premiered his new Major League Baseball hype anthem “Ball Game.” The song premiered in a promo spot for the first day of the 2021-22 season.
The minute-long video opens with a montage of classic first-day images — fans walking into an empty stadium, umpires dusting off home plate, batters adjusting their grip and outfielders scooping up balls — over a creaky soundtrack of the summertime standard “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” After a pandemic year in which teams played a foreshortened 2020 season, things were somewhat back to normal on Thursday, with less-than-capacity, socially distanced crowds in stadiums across the country.
“Baseball is back,” says a commentator in the MLB video. “It is a pleasure to be back with you.” As images of players getting hyped to take the filed unspool, a ticking beat swells up and Weezy puts his own spin on the hot weather oldie. “Take me out to the game, yeah/ Take me out to the ballpark,” he raps over images of ballers crushing homers.
“This a home run, I hit it far-far/ Knock it out the park, hit a parked car/ Root, root for the home team/ It’s a cool game with a warm heart/ And some high heat in the sweet spot/ It’s a grand slam, it’s a walk off,” he continues on the track that crams in just about every hardball buzzword possible in less than 30 seconds.
