After months of teasing, trolling and self-promoting, Lil Nas X is finally ready to welcome his bundle of joy — rather, his debut album Montero — into the world.
The new album boasts 15 songs, where Lil Nas X takes the genre-fusing approach that made his breakout single “Old Town Road” such a smash hit, and applies it to an entire album’s worth of rocking singles. Spread throughout the album as well are a number of special guest appearances, including stars like Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus, Elton John, and of course Jack Harlow on “Industry Baby.”
Starting with his No. 1 single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” back in March, and continuing through his latest No. 2 hit “Industry Baby,” Lil Nas X has methodically rolled out his long-awaited 15-song LP using controversial viral videos, fake pregnancy announcements, and even some very funny billboards to make sure that fans would be tuned in to the new project.
Upon announcing the album back in August, Lil Nas X shared his thoughts on making his debut album, saying that the process opened him up to some new insights. “Creating this album has been therapy for me,” he wrote in a statement. “I’ve learned to let go of trying to control people’s perception of who I am, what I can do, and where I will be. I’ve realized the only opinion of me that really matters is my own.”
The 22-year-old rapper recently made waves at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards, where he delivered a spicy performance of his song “Industry Baby,” and eventually took home video of the year for his controversy-driven visual for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).” In accepting the night’s top prize, Lil Nas had one thing to say: “Thank you to the gay agenda!”
