Kid Cudi has announced his upcoming album Free, revealing its artwork on Wednesday (July 9). Scheduled for release on August 22, the project takes strong visual and thematic cues from The Truman Show.
The album cover features Cudi stepping into the sky through a door, reminiscent of Jim Carrey’s iconic exit from Seahaven in the film. In sharing the artwork, Cudi wrote that fans can expect a “beautiful ride” in August.
“I wanted something that really expressed freedom, so the concept of me leaping into the clouds made so much sense,” he wrote. “Inspired by The Truman Show. I cant WAIT for u guys to hear this album and really see the album art brought to life. You’re in for a beautiful ride. Promise.”
Anticipation among fans is building for what looks to be a packed year for the rapper.
“I’m hyped for the album can’t wait for it will be celebrating my brother’s birthday and listening to free on his birthday too thank you for blessing us this announcement too,” a fan shared on Instagram.
The lead-up to Free began in May with the release of Cudi’s single “Neverland,” followed by a short film of the same name that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June. Another track titled “Grave” will drop this Friday (July 11).
August is shaping up to be major for Cudi, as he will release his debut memoir on August 5, ahead of the album’s arrival on August 22.
