Kendrick Lamar has shared his thoughts on the phrase “not like us,” a key line from his diss track directed at Drake that has been widely discussed in 2024. In his first interview after settling his rivalry with Drake, Kendrick spoke with SZA for the November edition of Harper’s Bazaar.
The conversation leaned more toward spirituality and personal growth rather than their feud, but SZA asked Kendrick what “Not Like Us” signifies for him. He replied, “[Laughing] Not like us? Not like us is the energy of who I am, the type of man I represent. Now, if you identify with the man that I represent.” He described this man as someone who possesses morals and values, stands firm in his beliefs, acknowledges his mistakes, and is not afraid to express his vulnerabilities.
SZA then asked how Kendrick manages to write such aggressive songs while not considering himself an angry person. He explained, “I don’t believe I’m an angry person. But I do believe in love and war, and I believe they both need to exist.” He highlighted that he can respond to situations without allowing them to define his identity.
The interview also explored his connection with God and his enthusiasm for running. Kendrick remarked, “Ain’t no bullshit. Ain’t no cliché. But I literally talk to God,” noting that his morning runs help him work through pain and spirituality, often leading to creative insights during his exercise.
Currently, Kendrick is working on his first film with the creators of South Park and hinted at pursuing different creative projects. He mentioned that his musical career is merely the start, stating, “I don’t think it’s my end goal. I know it’s not my end goal. Music is just a vessel to get me there.” He wrapped up by expressing his eagerness for what the future holds and his intention to let God guide his path.
