Jim Jones has stepped in to support Drake’s decision to sue his long-time label, Universal Music Group, for defamation in connection with Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.”
On the Broke N’ Frontin podcast, the “We Fly High” rapper shared his thoughts on Drake’s high-profile lawsuit, which has faced heavy criticism in the Hip Hop community.
Capo defended Drake against the backlash, emphasizing that Drake isn’t suing Kendrick Lamar directly. He argued that Drake has every right to seek financial compensation from a corporation that has a history of allegedly exploiting artists.
“He’s not snitching on anybody. He’s not in a court of law, he’s not personally suing Kendrick Lamar, which everybody seems to think that this lawsuit is about,” he explained. “He’s suing UMG, which is the biggest company that has the biggest bag, n-gga.”
Jones acknowledged that if Drake were suing Kendrick personally, there would be reason for an “uproar,” but he compared it to Tracy Morgan suing Walmart after a truck from the retailer hit him.
“When Tracy Morgan caught that bag, we were happy for him. So how the fuck we not gonna be happy about somebody getting a bag from one of the biggest companies that’s been raping everybody anyway?” he said.
The Dipset rapper continued: “This ain’t got nothing to do with [a] rap battle. The song is out! Whatever the people’s perception of him winning or losing is, it’s done. He said, ‘That’s how y’all feel? Cool.’”
He added, “Y’all associating muthafucking brussell sprouts with apples. It’s two totally different things… If it was any other thing, I would call a red flag. But this has got no reflection of the street or rap culture.”
Jones also likened Drake’s actions to a fictional action hero, saying: “This is a dangerous thing he’s doing. This is some James Bond shit he’s doing.”
While Jim Jones backs Drake’s lawsuit, others like Joe Budden have criticized it.
On a recent episode of his own podcast, the former Slaughterhouse member slammed Drake for the legal move, accusing him of damaging Hip Hop.
“You know how you running around with and you know what you doing and you know what you threatenin,” Budden said, referring to Drake’s “Mob Ties” persona and his connection to accused killer Top5, who has threatened Kendrick Lamar.
“So if you that, then be that. But don’t be that and also Karen out… I don’t like it. It’s nasty and disgusting.”
Budden further commented, “This shit is a fucking mess. It’s disgusting. And if you love this shit, it hurts! I’m saddened as a diss track king, as a n-gga who loves to get on the mic and tell lies about my opponent.”
He concluded, “Horrible things get said [in rap beefs], man. I just don’t like the Karen play-both-sides, the aggressor and the victim.”
