Jazmine Sullivan, H.E.R., and Maluma appeared on CBS This Morning on Monday (Feb. 8), following their participation at the Super Bowl LV, where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated Kansas City Chiefs, 31–9.
Before The Weeknd’s 14-minute-long halftime show on Sunday (Feb. 7), Sullivan, Eric Church, and H.E.R. took center stage for two powerful patriotic performances.
“It was definitely amazing,” Sullivan, who performed the national anthem next to country singer Church, said. “I think we just wanted to bridge the two worlds. He’s a country artist, I’m an R&B singer and we wanted to show that we could come together and bring unity within songs. it was all about the soul for me, what you bring to it and what it means to you.”
Notably, Sullivan and Church’s performance marked the first Super Bowl duet in over a decade.
H.E.R. also shined with her rocking rendition of “America The Beautiful.” “I was super nervous but I wanted to bring my flavor to it,” the Grammy winner said. “To be alongside someone like Jazmine, for two Black women to be up there, was a powerful message.”
Though he was not physically present at the 2021 Super Bowl, Maluma was also spotted as part of Michelob Ultra’s Super Bowl LV commercial.
“I’m in Miami. That was one of my biggest dreams to be at the Super Bowl and I understand, The Weeknd had to do his thing and the whole show was on fire but of course, I wanted to be there,” the Colombian artist said. “I wanted to perform [the] ‘Hawai’ remix, I’m not gonna lie.”
He continued: “I would love to bring my Latin culture and raise the flag of my country because the Super Bowl everyone knows it’s one of the biggest events of the world. It’s going to happen soon, I’m going to continue working for that.”
