Just weeks after SNL used a classic Eminem song to explain NFTs, Slim Shady is getting into the crypto game. Yes, Marshall is planning to issue some kind of non-fungible token this weekend, though at press time on Wednesday (April 21) it was unclear what his first dip into the one-of-a-kind digital art pool will look like.
In a tweet featuring a lightbulb emoji, Marshall linked to an earlier NIFTY Gateway tweet, which promised “Surprise… We’re excited to announce that @Eminem is dropping this Sunday — April 25th on #NiftyGateway!” The announcement promised that more details are forthcoming. The MC joins an A-list group of acts issuing NFTs through the service this week, including Blood Pop, A$AP Rocky, Disclosure and The White Stripes.
On Monday (April 19), Eminem finally responded to last month’s hilarious SNL sketch, in which Pete Davidson and Chris Redd explained NFTs via Marshall’s 2002 hit “Without Me.” In retrospect, his reaction — a chin-scratch emoji — now looks like a winky nod to his pending crypto announcement. In the sketch, dubbed “NFTs,” the crew breaks down everything you need to know about non-fungible tokens.
“Two silicon boys were talking outside, talking outside, talking outside,” Davidson raps in the bit, where he’s dressed up as Em’s fake superhero character Rap Boy from the “Without Me” video. “Now what the hell’s an NFT/ Apparently cryptocurrency/ Everyone’s making so much money/ Can you please explain what’s an NFT?” Maybe that explanation was enough to pique Slim’s interest?
