Doja Cat turned heads at the 2023 Met Gala by taking her rap name very literally.
The Planet Her hitmaker was just one of countless A-list celebrities who attended the annual fundraising bash in New York City on Monday night (May 1), but she made sure to stand out from the star-studded crowd with her choice of outfit.
Channeling her inner feline to the fullest, Doja wore prosthetic makeup that made her look like an actual cat. She completed her look by wearing a shimmering Oscar De La Renta dress equipped with a long, fluffy train and sequin cat ears.
The outfit was an ode to Karl Lagerfeld’s pet cat Choupette, with this year’s Met Gala theme honoring the late fashion icon. Jared Leto also paid homage by dressing up in a giant Choupette costume.
Taking her furry ‘fit one step further, Doja Cat even acted like a cat on the red carpet, meowing to every question during an interview with Vogue.
“Okay, so tell me all about this,” model Emma Chamberlain said to Doja, who replied: “Meow.” When asked about who made her dress and the inspiration behind it, Doja replied with several more “meows.”

Doja Cat is no stranger to outlandish looks. Earlier this year, she made headlines by attending a Paris Fashion Week show covered head-to-tie in red paint, with over 30,000 Swarovski crystals hand-applied to her upper body and face.
The avant-garde outfit, dubbed “Doja’s Inferno,” took makeup artist Pat McGrath almost five hours to apply and required the help of no less than five stylists.
That same week, the Grammy-winner turned heads again by donning a fake mustache, soul patch and bushy eyebrows made out of false eyelashes, which she paired with a pleated oversized suit designed by Viktor & Rolf.
For all her bold and eye-catching fashion choices, though, Doja Cat isn’t immune to criticism when it comes to her appearance. In February, the rapper/singer took issue with fans comparing her to Britney Spears after she shaved her head last summer.
“It’s so incredibly disrespectful for people to be minimizing what Britney went through and make a joke out of something that was very serious and a big deal in her life,” she said in an interview with Variety. “Every time I see a comment like that, I can’t compute what’s happening, other than it’s just an awful thing.”
Doja explained that she shaved her head simply because she fancied a change. “I wasn’t working out and wasn’t really taking care of myself in the way that I wanted to. I was like, ‘I need to do something,’ so I just chopped it all off,” she said.
“And I could see the shape of my head. I could see my whole face… it’s the best choice I’ve ever made, and I’ve never felt more beautiful.”
