Sherika Long-Platt, the wife of DJ Unk, has shared the details about his death after he unexpectedly passed away late last week.

Long-Platt confirmed to TMZ that the rapper and DJ passed away in his sleep on Friday, January 24, after experiencing a heart attack.

She explained that she wanted to disclose the cause of his death to prevent rumors from circulating, emphasizing that drugs were not involved in his passing.

A candlelight vigil was held in Unk’s memory on Sunday, January 26, in his hometown of Atlanta.

His death was first announced on Friday by his wife, who wrote on Facebook: “Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.”

His record label, Big Oomp Records, later confirmed his death with a statement.

“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as ‘DJ Unk,’” they said.

“On behalf of Big Oomp Records and the BOR Family, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the countless fans who were touched by his artistry and spirit.”

“DJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper, and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label and the imprint that he left globally will be cherished forever,” the label added.

“Hit songs such as ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step’ have left an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire artists, DJs, and fans alike for years to come. His energy, creativity, and commitment to the craft will never be forgotten.”

Unk had been dealing with health complications related to a heart attack he had in 2009, which was also the year he released his last full-length project, ATL Off Da Chain.

The following year, he opened up about his health challenges with XXL, saying: “I had some medical issues going on from not eating the right food and that just comes from when I stopped taking care of myself. I got to get healthy not just for my sake, but also for my kids and for my wife.”

He added: “It comes from not exercising, from not eating right. Basically man, I work hard every day. Everything I do every day I try to make something happen in my household. I constantly be on the go, I constantly be on airplanes, in different weather and you know it just took a toll on me. It was stress.”
