The 10th anniversary special edition of late rapper Mac Miller’s breakout K.I.D.S. mixtape dropped on Thursday (Aug. 13) and it features two new songs not available on the original Aug. 13, 2010, version: “Ayye” and “Back in the DAy.” The revamp from Rostrum Records of the record that originally dropped on DatPiff and was uploaded to streaming services in April comes on the heels of the January release of Miller’s posthumous album, Circles.
The 18-track K.I.D.S. (which stands for Kickin’ Incredibly Dope S–t), contains some of Miller’s most beloved early tracks, including “Nikes on My Feet” and “Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza.” The new tracks perfectly fit the loose, friendly vibe of K.I.D.S., with Mac rapping, “Too many people always thought I wouldn’t ever do s–t/ I’m ruinin’ my life and I’ll never get rich/ Forever I’m this, never goin’ back/ Don’t fade to black, I’ma stain the map/ Yeah, I’m changin’ rap and my name is Mac/ Trust me, then I’m ready when the cameras flash/ ‘Cause the boy got presents like Santa’s bag” over a chill, bouncy beat.
The more mellow “Back in the Day” finds Mac running down his budding success while reminiscing about the time when nobody believed in his dreams. “Back in the day, when it was a dream/ Nobody believed in what I could be/ But now I’m laughin’ at ’em like, ‘Ha-ha-ha,'” he raps. “‘Cause I’ma be okay/ Back in the day, when it was a dream/ Nobody believed in what I could be/ But now I’m laughin’ at ’em like, ‘Ha-ha-ha.'” Miller died of an accidental drug overdose in Sept. 2018 at age 26.
K.I.D.S. debuted at No. 112 on the Billboard 200 when it arrived on streaming services on April 29.
