Megan Thee Stallion is working with the National Association of Christian Churches (NACC) Disaster Services and U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee to rebuild her Houston hometown.
The hip-hop megastar is specifically raising funds to rebuild and repair homes for senior citizens and single mothers at no cost following Texas’ recent freeze. She enlisted the help of the local nonprofit organization responsible for offering emergency services to those recovering from national disasters and the U.S. representative for Texas’ 18th congressional district, but some of Meg’s A-list friends and brand partners are also supporting the cause. Her “Beautiful Mistakes” collaborator Maroon 5 and “Body” music video co-star Taraji P. Henson as well as her label 300 Entertainment and Fashion Nova, Mielle, Revlon, The Coach Foundation and Dolce and Gabbana are all listed as donors to the initiative, which will begin immediately and continue over the next two years.
“Seeing the devastation and hearing the heartbreaking stories that have surfaced, I knew I had to do something to help my hometown,” the 26-year-old rapper said in an official statement. “I am so happy that Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, the NACC and I aligned on the goal of repairing the homes of the elderly and uninsured single moms who are the most vulnerable and often displaced by these kinds of devastating events.”
NACC will work with Congresswoman Lee for referrals on homes needing rebuilding from online submissions through the Helping Houston Rebuild official website. Houston residents will receive aid based on critical need and a lottery. Public adjusters will assess damages and licensed professionals will evaluate plumbing, electricity and structural repairs with walls, floors, and other damages, while volunteers will remove water-logged materials.
“Throughout my Congressional District and Houston, I saw the pain of people having destroyed homes. The historic and tragic disaster that was driven by the freeze and lack of preparation of the Texas electric grid caused lives to be lost and families to be displaced,” Congresswoman Lee said in a statement. “The collective efforts of Megan Thee Stallion, the NACC and the 18th Congressional District will help restore the lives and hopes of people who suffered from no fault of their own. Our goal is to rebuild and restore these homes, which is imperative for my constituents to feel safe and secure. Thank you to Megan the Stallion and NACC, and I look forward to working with you on this very important project of restoration of people’s homes.”
Fellow Houston rapper Travis Scott also took action following the state’s historic winter disaster. His Cactus Jack Foundation launched an emergency food program to provide 50,000 hot meals to people with help from the City of Houston and the Houston Health Foundation. NACC, The Black Service Chamber and restaurant owners helped Scott and his foundation identify the most vulnerable groups of people in need of assistance.
