Pete Davidson embraced his inner rapper — or inner Drake and André 3000, technically — in two sketches that he contributed to this week’s unique live-from-home episode of Saturday Night Live.
On Saturday night (April 11), the SNL cast managed to deliver sketches that were filmed completely remotely, with each cast member, host Tom Hanks, and musical guest Chris Martin all taping their respective contributions from the comfort of their own homes. In Davidson’s case, he went back to Staten Island to stay with his mom, who directed “Drake”.
In “Drake,” Davidson dons a puffy coat, a regular fixture in Drake music videos, and hangs out in a basement washed in vibrant light — another Drake calling card courtesy of “Hotline Bling” and “Nice For What.” Set over a beat that bites from a slower “One Dance,” the chorus of Davidson’s track is simple: “This is a Drake song / I miss my ex, this is a Drake song ”
With “André 2000,” Davidson head’s upstairs at his mom’s house to show off the rims on the cars in the driveway while flexing his limited funds and freaking out about debt: “I’m a new young rapper on the block / About $2,000 is all I got / I put it in the video in every shot / It’s $2,000, it’s all I got / But it looks good in the video / But it’s only twenty hundreds, though.”
