Jay-Z Seeks to Have Sexual Assault Lawsuit Dismissed

Jay-Z has submitted a request to have the lawsuit against him dismissed. The case was filed by a woman who claims the rapper, along with Sean “Diddy” Combs, sexually assaulted her when she was 13 at a VMAs after party in 2000.

The motion was filed on Wednesday after receiving approval from U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres. In the request, Jay-Z’s legal team points out several contradictions in the woman’s story.

Attorney Alex Spiro, representing Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter), refers to an interview the accuser gave to NBC News in December, where she admitted to having “made some mistakes” in recounting the events. Spiro argues that the accuser’s lawyer, Tony Buzbee—who is already involved in a defamation case with Carter—has accused him of “a horrific crime without properly verifying the allegations.”

Buzbee has yet to respond to Variety’s request for a comment.

Previously, Judge Torres criticized Spiro for filing aggressive motions with inflammatory language and personal attacks against Buzbee. In this new motion, Spiro reinforces his stance, stating that the accusations contain numerous “inconsistencies and outright impossibilities.”

The woman, identified as Jane Doe, originally filed the lawsuit against Combs in October and later added Carter’s name to it in December. After being named in the suit, Carter quickly issued a statement calling the allegations a “blackmail attempt.” Roc Nation, his entertainment company, also released a statement referring to Buzbee as an “1-800 lawyer” focused on “money and fame.”
